The House of the Devil
Directed by Ti West
A stranger lures a babysitter to a house with an unusually large sum of money. But when she arrives, Samantha doesn’t find any kids. Just a large and very creepy house, that may not be as empty as it seems. Indie horror director Ti West (THE INNKEEPERS) made his mark with this terrifying ‘80s throwback, featuring cult horror legends like Dee Wallace (THE HOWLING), Mary Woronov (NIGHT OF THE COMET), plus Greta Gerwig - before she hit it big. You’ll never bop around listening to headphones in an empty house again after watching what happens to Samantha. Contains violence and gore.

Going to say upfront that THIS IS A SLOW BURN. It’s a good movie, regardless of pace, and I feel like the payoff is worth it. I also enjoyed the style of the movie, the retro look and the 80s music, as well as a nice cameo or two. This is a top 3 Ti West movie for me. I would recommend if you like Ti West movies, slow burns, cult movies, or if you love the aesthetic of 80s movies.
I get why some people are divided on this film, however I personally think it's a masterpiece. A 70's horror film not unlike The Changeling or Burnt Offerings (if you were to swap possession themes for satanic cult themes). And when I say 70's horror, I mean it! I'm aware the movie came out in 2010 but GOD DAMN did Ti West pull out all the stops to make this as authentic as possible. I disagree that there is nothing to this movie or that there is no plot progression from the beginning to the end. It's there, you just have to pay attention as there is little to no dialogue and Ti west relies entirely on visual cues to progress the story and character. With that said, if you're not a student of the game or a fan of 70's slow burn horror it's definitely not for you. But if you are - This is a masterpiece!
There is nothing to this movie.
Wonderful slow burn with lots of nods to classic horror. If you’re familiar with the director’s other work you might know what to expect. Not for those with short attention spans.
I wanted to like this more. Definitely more of a positive experience than negative, but I fell victim to the hype.
