Sauna

Directed by Antti-Jussi Annila

A crime comes back to haunt two men when they arrive in a strange Finnish village in this horror film set in the year 1595. A brutal war has just ended and brothers Knut and Erik are part of a team marking the border between Finland and Russia. But when they commit a terrible sin, leaving a girl to die a horrible death, they find her ghost haunts them as they make their way through the country. Finally they come across a village with a sauna where all sins are supposedly washed away. Seeking forgiveness, the brothers step in - and that's when things get ugly. Well shot, interesting premise, but all in all poor use of the actual thing. Could have been scarier and really needed a better, more cohesive ending. Its an interesting watch but ultimately disappointing.

Beautifully shot and somewhat interesting premise but quite slow and I found myself looking at how much time was left a bunch of times.

I was very impressed with Sauna. It's a nice slow atmospheric film sprinkled with genuinely creepy moments and exquisite cinematography. If you like to theorize about something you've just watched then this is a good choice for you.

I suppose it was beautifully shot as some reviews suggest, but frankly it was boring. Not just slow with an interesting, deliberate plot - just boring. And I found no compelling or cohesive internal lore to explain what was going on, especially the ending.

Really, really enjoyed it. Beautifully shot, restrained but emotive acting , captivating story-line. I think I'm going to look up some of the folklore of the region then watch it again!
