Two women find themselves trapped in a haunted castle ruled by sex-crazed vampires after fleeing unknown pursuers trying to kill them. Will they stay and join the randy ranks of the undead? Or make a break for it? This being a Jean Rollin film, you can bet there'll be lots of nude romping and sensual softcore sex in between the neck-biting and blood spilling. Beautiful Rollin mainstay Marie-Pierre Castel stars in the lead role. Several of her nude scenes had to be shot twice with more clothing to make it past the censors.

i think this is the Rollin film i've liked the most so far (Fascination also had its appeal). i often see his particular approach to texture called "surrealism", but i wonder if that might be a bit misleading. it might perhaps be better described as playing with artificiality or staginess to achieve an effect. as with many such things, over the course of his films, we see a set of variations on that technique. sometimes it seems habitual, ill-suited. but i found it works better in, or proceeds more naturally from, this film, perhaps because it is an earlier work and it is closer to the initial impulse. this is a bit of a slim offering, but the ruins are beautiful, the cinematography is quite lovely, and i like the lighting: how it illuminates outdoor scenes with strange sourceless pools of light, and indoor scenes with lurid colored fills. i found it pleasant enough.
