Loved the aesthetic here. Slow and cozy and creepy, with a unique main character.
As an avid fan of M. R. James' work, I found this adaptation disappointing. The filmmakers managed to incorporate a number of specific details that were exact to the original story, and yet they stripped the story of its spirit. It's visually interesting at times and has some creative cinematography, but the characters are unappealing, and it really feels too long considering the lack of story content. IMO, the runtime probably could have been cut in half.
spooky
The more I watch this one, the more I like it. It's just so weird. So weird. And Michael Hordern's portrayal of an academic is brilliant.
Interesting. I personally enjoyed the dry atmosphere, but I also watched it at work killing time. It's certainly haunting, slow and dry, but I found myself intrigued and drawn in by the vibes. Not a lot HAPPENS, but I don't regret watching it at work on a Christmas Eve. The Ash Tree was certainly scarier though.
