This was one of those films that just confirms for me that shudder is no longer worth it. AMC plus is enough for me at this point. I kept Shudder because of what it used to be. Even when the catalog was small and the original content was minimal, there was a charm and an exciting endearing atmosphere that unfolded every time you opened the app, every time you heard those Shudder notes. But not anymore. Majority of the selection here, is available for free on Tubi. What isn’t available for free on Tubi is either foreign, over 25 years old, or just absolutely pathetic films like this one here. I’m sorry, but this was horrible and anyone who enjoyed it, enjoyed it for reasons that are outside of good, enjoyable horror fun. I have no issue with queer horror, lgbtq+ horror, not at all, and I’m only clarifying because even the review sections in shudder have gotten insanely obnoxious, I’ve noticed that anytime a certain type of movie gets negative reviews, there’s a parade of newer reviews insulting the critics as right wingers and trumpers and other nonsense, all because they bashed a movie for being crappy, and that movie happened to fall under the queer/lgbtq+ horror genre. As if we aren’t allowed to dislike anything within that genre. As if it’s not possible for anything using that genre as their foundation and identity to end up being a mess and trash. That annoys me to no end. This movie is a clear example of why promoting something just because of who it is rather than what it is, leads to the degrading and rotting of art and culture. The LGBTQ+ community is filled with brilliant artists from all walks of life, there’s no limit to the talent and possibilities. And it’s a fucking shame that this is the type of shit that keeps being pumped out, using the community as their cash cow marketing strategy. This is an embarrassment to upmost degree. It reads like fan fiction written by a straight middle schooler who’s desperate to feel edgy and rebellious and fantasizes about a bad ass version of themselves, using their fan fiction as the outlet for that alter ego. Seriously. I’m not trying to be mean. I’m trying to be honest. This was modern day middle school angst, and the worst part ? It feels exactly like the fake sht that has been everywhere lately. Call me crazy, but I don’t find it particularly uplifting or respectful when people hijack identities and real life experiences, so that they can cosplay as something other than themselves, something that for some reason is currently trending amongst other cosplaying fakes, and something that has been turned into the most non realistic, self destructive mess of modern times. It’s fucking annoying. And a slap in the face. This was bad enough to piss me off. For real. And I actually finished it. I’m at a loss with shudder. At an absolute loss. Australia, wtf? How do you drop shit like “Talk to me” and this crap all in the same 2 years span ? What is going on????? Oh that’s right. We’ve given anyone who uses the magic words a trophy and a screenplay green light. Way to make us look like a joke.
good amount of fun, with a diamond in campy rough performance from Cassie Hamilton. I'm just amazed a 20 year old filmmaker is already so prolific, just shows I need to watch more low budget aus horror films so i can gee myself up to finally making mine.
Alice is the moment
TRUE punk film. playful and grounded. great cast and leading lady as usual. luscious colors and rich shots. ambitious effects for a low-budget film. fantastic messaging- a great allegory for the lived experience of trans people. looking forward to everything alice maio mackay puts out in the future. she's a legendary horror filmmaker already .
interesting movie. part of me is like "embrace the camp," but sometimes it's hard to watch and immerse in bc of the home movie of it all
