Effective, brutal, taut thriller. At points where it seemed to be getting predictable, it had a neat twist or surprise. Kate Siegel is phenomenal.
Don't introduce me to a character that you SHOW ME is a clever, quick-thinking writer and have her act like an idiot in order to make your story work: A killer's stalking you, so why NOT stand in front of the big windows and not pull shades? Why not (MINOR SPOILER) distract your friend who might save you when you see him holding a baseball-sized rock in his hand while standing behind a killer? These are just two (of MANY) examples of this SMART character acting stupid. Also, it's established that she's deaf, but they neglect to tell us that she apparently has absolutely NO peripheral vision -- someone is standing 4 feet from you outside your window, moving, you're going to notice. Well, unless the script tells you not to. Awful.
Excellent film, I watched this a while ago but didn’t realise it was Mike Flanagan, I actually search out most things done by him, I love his style, Bly manor and haunting of hill house were sublime and of course the fall of the house of usher, along with Ryan Murphy he is my go to for decent horror/thriller.
I usually love Mike Flanagan's projects, but honestly I think this film took a big dip in quality as soon as (Slight Spoiler) The Man takes off his mask and is now just 'some guy' instead of a creepy masked killer. He becomes so much less intimidating.
Mike Flanagan should make more films
